A is for Abstinence

ABSTINENCE-
any self-restraint, self-denial, or forbearance

I'm participating in the A-Z challenge this month. So my first post is this--Abstinence (specifically that long, slow roll between when love interests meet and the actual hook-up.)

I love this. I will turn page after page, wanting, waiting, being teased then disappointed then encouraged again...until finally...I have to wait for book two, then three, then four.

Keeping your main characters from getting what they want, especially when what they want is another person.

The sweet, painful, longing.

  1. I agree, it's the best driving force for romance. Love it!

  2. Waiting for anything makes finally getting it so much better. Looking forward to your posts! Keep typing!

  3. Love it in romance but also in any other kind of anticipation like in an action thriller or even in a punchline to a joke. Its always enjoyable to be held off for awhile and have to wait for the moment to arrive.

I am also doing the challenge I will be back for more.

    1. Hi MaryAnn! Yes, asking the questions and drawing out the answer for as long as possible.

  4. Yes! I'm the same way. It's all about the build up and the anticipation! (Oh, that would have been an awesome A word. Maybe next year.)

  5. Like the old ladies say, why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free? Keeping that intensity up by denying contact is a great way to build up the tension in a romance!

    Visiting from AtoZ!

  6. A word I also reiterate with my teenage daughter! ;) Good word and concept to apply to our characters.

  8. I agree. Keep your characters from getting what they want, for a while anyway. Same is true in life ... no pain no gain. :)
Look forward to reading more of your posts.
