Distress, Despair, Death

Distress, despair, death--novels have to have them. Maybe not all of them, character don't have to die (I suppose) but as as the grand orchestrator of your story you can't back off of punishing your characters.

A book with little to no conflict is the book that gets put down.

I have a confession to make. I can't believe I'm actually going to say this out loud but...

I loved the series as much as anyone but I think Harry Potter should have died at the end of DHs. (GASP!)

I think killing him and then bringing him back from the dead was a cop out. (Double GASP, GASP!)

There, I've said it.

  1. There were a lot of people who felt the same way you do, Becky. Believe me. As a forum moderator during that frenzy before the release of Deathly Hallows I read thousands of people's thoughts theories. There were many who felt that if Harry didn't die, the series would be ruined.

But I'm glad Jo let Harry continue to be the Boy Who Lived. Not all stories end with the hero dying (nor do they all end with the hero surviving). But I think all along, Harry's hero journey was a tale of survival.

But I was prepared for him to die in the end. Jo had said the last book would be a blood bath. And it was.

  2. I don't know how I'd feel about Harry dying in the last book. I think I would have been really upset, for sure. Maybe it would have had more of a lasting impression if he did. But I'm actually glad he lived. (I don't think I ever thought he would die)

  3. No gasp from me. It's interesting to hear another point of view. I agree with Donna, though. The series very much was a story of survival. I would have been devastated if he made it through all the turmoil to die. Harry's story keeps me moving forward no matter how much conflict is piled on my plate. Good luck with the challenge!

  4. I might have had "nightmares" in case harry had died.. My opinion, he was too young to die...! The story wise, it did make a weird ending - ie dying and then coming back to life - when everywhere else it was insisted that no spell can bring back the dead... ;) I analyze logically "after" I watch a movie or read a book.. as long as it was an HEA.. if not, then I would never refer to it again !

    Following you from A-Z challenge!

  5. Gasp! Well, maybe harry's death would've made the story more dramatic, but like every other rowling fan, I'm a sucker for happy endings. :P i was already so sad when a certain twin died and to have harry or one of the other major characters die would have been devastating. great meeting you through the a-z!

  6. Hello would you mind sharing which blog platform you're using? I'm going to
start my own blog in the near future but I'm having a difficult time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique.
P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
